rough riding

as surely as i know the sun will rise in the east and set in the west,
i know june is going to be a bad month.
at least for me it is.

my husband has a myriad of health issues.
one of which is minor, but changes the entire temperature and texture of my life.
he has allergies.
his allergies are significant enough to make taking shots for them a decent solution.
herein lies the rub.
he refuses to do such a thing.

it causes some of the most awful suffering and attitudinal backlashes.
pretty much by now, i totally hate him.
in this moment, i am sure that the feeling is pretty temporary.
at least i am hoping it is temporary.
i often wonder how on earth do we survive all the crap that mates toss our ways?

i just don't know.
it is pretty rough inside my skin right now.
this is how i know it is june.
june is also responsible for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
it is more important than actually celebrating a wedding anniversary.
even if his team isn't playing.
and that is most often the case.
so no anniversary.

he has a weird disease underlying everything.
so any other stress that comes his way is piggybacking onto
dermatomyocytis.
i am uncertain if he feels it at all anymore, since it is in remission.
it is rheumatoid in nature.
and rare.
it is one of the diseases that is featured on the show "House".

its expression is of having a pulled muscle in every muscle in your body at the same time.
his came out in skin rashy patches that looked like psoriasis.
when it was in full flare up,
he would have to stretch his neck and turn his head simultaneously to swallow.
if he sat on the sofa, he would not be able to get up.
little things that add up and are scary are featured in this.

the net result is that he had a heart attack from this stupid disease.
it weakened all the muscle strength of his heart.
we all have to eat totally differently because of it.
exercise is more important too.
i worry about my kids and the likelihood that they could inherit some freakish part of his
dysfunctional dna.
like i don't worry enough as it is already.

so in addition to handling heart and skin and muscular issues,
he is cranky as all shit.
and this is where he is the most generous.
he shares his bitchy inner self
mostly with me.

i am tired of it all.
june is sucking a lot this time around.
i wish  i could enjoy the love and successes around me better,
but this is a vacuum that hones in on my joys.
i am fighting tooth and nail to keep from being ingested by that vacuum.
if only we could get to july through safer waters.
that sure would be worth all the rough riding.

thanks for letting me release some of this...
it is not good to bottle it all up, but there is no place to really let it go either.

buhbye bad ju-ju

i am in the middle of re-watching a series of episodes of Foyle's War.
it is very enjoyable in spite of the war-time setting.
what strikes me is that all the crummy stuff that happens to the many characters in the series
is the same no matter when it is happening.
i find it much more palatable with the great costuming and the british accents.

it seems that my need for this is to help ease me through some of the daily grinding here.
there have been a few events that are knocking me about.
first there was the loss of my tooth.
that came on the heels of a complete need for a personal makeover:
eating better and exercising more.
obvious as that is, it did need to be said and put into personal context.

secondly, i was a vendor at a show on sunday.
my take was not as good as i had hoped it could be.
it wasn't a loss situation, but i felt as if it might have been more positive.
like everyone else, i have bills that are just hard to get under control easily.
in doing a show circuit, you need to be months ahead of where you think you are.
it is helpful to plan for december in june for example.

so i was driving down 95 southbound to get home and just collapse.
perhaps i had it in my mind to even make some fuss over father's day for my hubby.
somehow, that became the last thing on my list.
i had purchased a lovely photograph from one of my fellow artists,
Doug Hockman.

the hubby's truck has been causing him intolerable grief.
so i snagged this beauty for him.
i thought it would be sorta sweet and romantic and all.

all of doug's beautiful photos can be seen and purchased from his website:

also he is often available to meet as you rifle through some of his other photos
at shows.
for more info as to where he might be and when he may be there,
i get caught up here:

***

as for one of my more recent events,
coming back on the highway from my day at SOWA...
this happened.

my rear tire shredded on the highway.

i actually watched it roll loose on the road, spinning across 3 lanes of traffic and finally coming to rest
at the guardrail bordering the innermost lane of traffic.

can you say
unbelievably freaked out???

all things worked out ok.
but i am still a tad shaky from the entire experience.
not that any of the lunatics here would notice.

i was required to drive home from CT last night in the pitch dark for a two hour spate.
husband bought himself a "new" old car.
i went with him and the boy to go retrieve it.
two hours down, two hours back.
not a thank you or a please in the conversations.

i have plenty to say about how irritated i am for the lack of sensitivity regarding my shakiness...
however in the efforts to remain a decent human being, i will restrain myself on that tirade.

everyone is fine.
no one was injured.
all is ok.
not perfect, but ok.
reasons to be grateful... A, B, C...

***

so i am going to instead primp and show a pretty new necklace that has been coming in stages.
i did not plan it so, but it worked out to be this.
sometimes, i think things just have their own way of coming together.

this photo is from my sowa showing.

still you can get the gist of what pink and green can mean to me.
calming. restful. orderly.
ommmm.

time to spend some effort with the pearl girls.
i need their classy elegance
and restful timelessness
to soothe my frazzled feelings.

things that are lost

sometimes things are lost.
this can be both physical as well as not.
like you can lose a pen ... or misplace it.
perhaps you can lose a train of thought.
something that i am doing all too regularly these days.
i consider it part of my aging process.
pretty soon, i will have a well filled basket near where i sit.
it will be filled with wisps of thoughts never fully formed.
or perhaps filled with ones that should NEVER be expressed.
today, i felt the pain of loss.

it is probably from almost 20 years ago that this thread began.
my dentist wanted me to have some oral surgery to make my gums as strong as possible.
i was in the middle of raising my three children and the idea of voluntary pain,
so soon after 3 natural births...
scared me senseless.

i knew i would get kids when the pain of childbirth was ended.
it did not seem plausible that the very painful prospect of gum surgery would yield
such a happy and pleasing result.

now years later, i feel terribly foolish.

i was told after my first kid was popped, to do some crunches.
some kind of specific exercise to pull my abdominal muscles back into what was healthier shape.
instead, i became pregnant again and was unable to wear my jeans
within no time at all.
i mean i could not bend properly after 3 weeks.
this was my boy... mr. 10-4.
he delayed my already flimsy resolve to return to abdominal shapeliness.

i kind of gave up.
an ectopic pregnancy resulting in surgery,
another bouncing big baby girl
and then
a failure of term pregnancy left me a little busy and heartbroken.

so within 6 or so years, i had 5 pregnancies of which 3 had gone to term.
i was busy and not focused.
the result was i never regained a passable waistline.
i not only let my hourglass go, but as a result, developed a herniation.
the scar tissue from the surgical resolution of my ectopic pregnancy has resolved in a
whopping tummy protusion.
this needs to be surgically resolved.

finally, after all this time, i have been diagnosed as likely having diabetes as well.
it has been a hell of a lot to take in this month.

today my tooth was seen by a dentist.
should have had that stinking peridontic surgery.
oh so long ago.
everything that has happened is pretty much my own fault.
i had my molar extracted today.
long story short, the area around the tooth root was infected and the bone rotted around the tooth itself.
i was in and out of the dentist office.
no time at all was spent on the tlc factor.
i felt like i had been jacked up onto a car lift,
looked at,
and rather dispassionately told that the tooth was going to need extraction.
done and done in half an hour.
i almost fainted.
no one even noticed.
the fact i have been crying on and off all day over a tooth is kind of surprising.
still i feel a huge loss.

it is the loss of my youth
plain and simply.
i have always been very careful.
no broken bones or stitches as a child.
my health issues were as a pregnant woman or the post partum effects of
being the last person i considered.
like i said, i have myself to blame.
it is now my turn to deal with things.

i gave up doritos.
soda.
pastry and cookies
(except today... so much stress)
now eating cholesterol sensitive foods.
only one coffee a day.
drink more water as soda replacement.
vegetables are king.
salt is still here, but not as much.

each day a little more of things i have indulged in have gone by the wayside.
surely i do not need them.
still
my resiliency in physicality is at an all time low.
i am very sure that it will rebound.
losing weight will help or completely get rid of the diabetes.
my fingers are crossed here.
surgery for the hernia will be loads easier.
and the joy of wearing nicer clothes is a huge perk.
i am really looking forward to that.

it is not only a time of loss, but also a time of huge personal growth.
my kids are old enough and
my husband is too old.
everyone needs to pitch in some.
i have been there for all of them... in any way needed.
now it is my turn.
and only i can make this work.

while losing my mind over the death of my tooth,
i  sorted some flowers and placed them by size, shape and colors
into an old printing block tray.
here is how nifty they all look together.

tomorrow,  i shall spend time with this tray of lovelies.
it is time to make some replacement inventory.
i participated in a two day show in my own back yard.
it took all of last weekend to complete.
my son helped me out and it was really great to have his company all day for two days.
he is a great kid.

some pics from the now completed,
FESTIVAL FETE, Garden City location.

earrings, pins and barrettes

a  cutlery case repurposed for earrings and barrettes

my son, soaking in the counteractive effects of a recent edition of
POPULAR MECHANICS.
it should offset all the jewelry.

a necklace, bracelet and ring display table.

a nice grouping of beady flower necklaces

now i think would be a good time to hit the hay.
loads to do tomorrow.
heaven knows, i will enjoy making it ...
and perhaps after a good sleep, i won't sound so maudlin.

sleep tight kiddies.

Mothers everywhere

once again, i wish all the mothers out there a special and warm, heart-felt, sincere
MOTHER'S DAY
CELEBRATION!

no matter what the circumstances of it is for you personally,
i know we all have issues.
and i still wish you the best.

my maternal grandmother hannah,
was considered the most self-involved woman to ever exist.
i say, she just did not suffer uninteresting people well.
to me, she was the best and most favorite of all of my 4 living grandmothers.
yes, i had a large number of grandmothers.
she was well educated, in a single sex college.
she graduated from a women's college (Hunter College)
to attain a secondary degree in Music.
she took her masters degree and taught her music to kids in Harlem
in the earlier part of the 20th century.
at some time she split her time between teaching and later sewing.
the family story is that she made dolls to entice me into their charms.
it did not work in the manner desired.
i was to fall in love with the little high-end, hand-crafted, hand stuffed dolls.
these little 18 inch long gals with blonde hair, black hair, red hair and brown...
were to entice me into the joys of conventional girlie type of playing.
what they did instead was teach me to be ultra precise as both a seamstress
and an embroiderer.
yep, i was seduced not by the play intended, but by the joy of embroidery.
hannah would be encouraged to entertain me over my school breaks by my mom.
i went to her with more joy than i went to any other grandmother.
she had a house that was filled with stuff i could not get enough of.
not the musical stuff, but the fabrics.
and the trims.
and the eaves of her home,
which adjoined her bedroom replete with t.v. and fainting couch
as well as her miraculously busy fabric filled sewing room.

i am so worried these days.
at least one time a week, i have a deeply detailed dream that incorporates her home
and vacations spent with her and my grandfather, Bumpy.
i am still so many years later,
able to draw the floor plan of all the rooms in her home.
i spent hours there.
playing on the landing under a  large dormer on a space off of the stairs.
her closet was built under another dormer.
it was filled with magical fabrics that could entice
ali baba and the forty thieves.
i loved it there.
not everything needed to be utilized.
simply stroking rolls of silks that were shot with metallic threads.
an indian princess would be thrilled to visit and create from these.
instead, i got to admire them with clean hands.
it was truly magical.
yes, i was trained to sew on the machines when i was in 6th grade.

my grandmother and mom shared the cost of a brand new singer sewing machine for me.
i still use it today.
not as faithfully of course,
but we understand one another.
i spent many hours threading my own fabrics through her presser foot and
have created many things for both home and body.

still hannah had her issues.
no one in her family thought that she was at all kind or generous
... and she was unfailingly so.
i learned a lot from her.
and miss her so very often these days.

she was my mother's mother.
it was thorny and weird.
i am glad i got the benefits of what redemptive mothering she picked up along the way.
she was a crap mother to her own kids.
and as those things go,
they were seeds that returned the favors in kind.

this is water under the bridge.
i keep telling myself this.
someday, it will not be of any matter anymore.
i have my fingers crossed.

my other grandmothers are
HELEN,
MAGGIE
and
EMMA.

really striking women in all of their own ways.
Helen was my mother's father's second wife.
the one after he and hannah divorced.
she was treated as an outsider grandmother.
we never let her particularly near.
it must have seared her heart.
she of course in that chicken and egg ironic relationship, was rather bitchy.

after a while she and hannah could eat thanksgiving dinner together and
introduce themselves to other guests as friends.
my mother spent time gasping and hiccuping the first time this happened.
it was so peculiar to see them in different light after decades of
back-biting and in-fighting.
helen was a second time bride, for my grandfather(poppy).
she had served in WWII as a WAK(i think??).
she worked in a NYC hospital, as a professional dietician for decades.
she had the same haircut always, made fashionable by a pair of cuticle scissors.
these were always on hand... just to keep from spending a buck she didn't need to.
educated, surviving the BIG depression, funny, snarly, set into her ways,
and charming in ways i never appreciated.
at least until it became late.

EMMA,
was one of the women my eldest daughter was named for.
she was a baker by profession.
i tried to do a mapping for an elementary school project with her help.
a really long time ago.
i needed to find out as many family ties and places of origin as i could.
nobody knew where she really came from.
she and her husband, Sam  had emigrated from europe.
we are jewish stock and the religious component may change,
but over wartimes and other issues of geo-politics, borders changed all the time.
emma was my father's grandmother.

like i said, she came from europe with her husband whom i only lightly remember.
she bought a bakery when she was 65, just when folks would be retiring.
she ran it for a few years and sold it.
it was in Flushing, NY... Queens that is.
my grandmother found the new owners ran her prize business so poorly,
that she bought it back from them.
i think she must have been in her 70's around then.

she ran this business until she was in her mid-80's.
by the point of her retirement, my own parents had divorced by then.
she was kind enough and foolish to trust me with silver boxes wrapped with baker's twine.
inside of these were her butter cookies.
spritz cookies to be exact.
they melted in your mouth and were heavenly.
dragees, minced candies, sprinkles...
pastel colors...
butter.
so much buttery goodness.
they never got shared with my mother whom i was supposed to be returning them to.
i still have some guilt about that... but not enough to truly confess to my mom about.

emma was a straight shooter.
even if my own father, her only grandson, was an utter boob... she would not forget my mother.
my greed for her great skills and tender cookies probably screwed things up a lot.
i am sorry for this.
still you would not fault me one whit if you had tasted any of her food.

over the years folks have asked me how i got to be such a good cook.
i know it was a myriad of dna crashing together in epic fights...
allowing me to be her god-given heiress to the love of butter and
fingers to treat flour with tender care as it required.
i learned what a real strudel should look like...
and i was able to read a newspaper through the stretched dough as the family always bragged about when describing her skills with it.
my actually making it, came out of my explorations within the pages of early
JOY OF COOKING
investigations.

how could you doubt one's skill,
when you could read the recipe,
compose the dough,
stretch it as thinly as grandma did,
fill it with tasty sliced and spiced apples on top of a freshly laundered tablecloth...
then tip the cloth to let the dough slowly roll up on itself and into a log shape?
how could it be that anyone who had this gene bloc
could miss out on this culinary thrill and not revere the woman
who gifted it to you?
you just could not.
as a side note, she also kept big carp in her bathtub on fridays...
preparing them for saturday's big meal.
it always featured gefilte fish and a little fishy aspic.
this took me a very long time to accept.
i never could eat anything that shook... except jello.
as a small concession to her aging and preparing meals to feed a small army
(eating guests numbered into the teens),
eventually the gefilte and horseradish came from jars.
still she was 85 then.

the final of the 4 grandmothers was MAGGIE, aka Margaret.
she was a lot like Marge Simpson.
her hair was high, and her voice low and gravelly.
she was the prima donna of all family festivals.
she had her hair all dolled up, sporting the special coif of the age.
her nails were done.
she had lipstick to match the nails .
she seemed to have what i now think of as disposable income.
her particular thing was her husband was a professional musician.
grandpa benny played coronet in the NBC Toscannini Orchestra.
i say this as if i should know something more about it.
never have i held the remotest interest.
sorry.
(maybe i will google it tonight?)
maggie traveled with her husband and left her two kids to the charges of many nannies.
thus explaining a little about how they too became what we now call
DYSFUNCTIONAL.
maggie was emma's daughter.
she was my father's mother.
it all comes into focus... like vaseline on jelly jar glasses.
it was a clash of DNA titans when all this stuff tried to settle down.
needless to say, it was also in my blood by this time.

so i was reared not only by my very screwy parents, but their parents also.
each of them weighed in somehow.
there were really great parts of all of their contributions.
i have glossed over them briefly.
thank the heavens,
that i have a sense of humor to accompany
my bitter disappointments,
and many quirk-filled life experiences.
it is with this stringy quagmire, i come to mother my own brood.
so many lessons before me, so many to share with my kids and husband.
it has been a significantly different time for these 3 wily precious critters.
they have had no grandmotherly experience to contend with.
i assure them that it is for the best.
their father's family is also not part of our little unit.
so we stumble along...
happily enough in each other's company.
en masse, it is a real laugh riot.
(almost always).
and it is what a family can be.
i do love it.
just thought i should share that.

some days, i consider that perhaps,  i breast fed those manimals for too long.
they are smarter than i am and harder to keep an edge on...
after all that great brain growing stuff from the breast milk.
i have been out of my depth since day one...
but i am gonna keep at it until i can't any longer.
motherhood is a job you really have to fuck up to not stay in it.
i still feel pretty good about it all.
that can change with the winds of course.
or as i like to think of it now,
graham's second year at college.

*****

today, i wanted to see if i could make a lot of bracelets.
i tried. i made 10.
there were enough distractions.
i got hungry.
i needed coffee.
my neighbor's house needed a window boarded up.
i needed a nap.

you get the picture.
slightly that of a cranky toddler just getting a second wind.
here you go:

i fade therefore i am... so farewell for tonight. xoxo.w.

a square life

today marked the opening of the outdoor show season
for many of my fellow art and handmade comrades.
i made it to boston with my son who was invited to go with me...
and my husband who wanted to come along too.
needless to say, i thought that hubby was horning in on my potential time with my boy.
in preparing for this adventure in opening day outdoor selling,
i have been quite overwhelmed with so many tasks and inventory
and wholesale orders to be completed.
my husband drove to NH to pick the boy up from his mid-way
destination at a friend's home.
i stayed put to make the finishing touches on my work.
naturally i was a little envious, that hubby wanted to share today too.
i will say, that without a doubt, both of my guys were inestimably great assistants.
perhaps without their assistances, i might still be breaking down my show set-up.
happily, i am not.

as  my guys drove southbound from NH to little rhody,
hubby was entreated to pick up a few staples i had planned to have in hand.
one was the little square gizmo that is used to read credit/debit cards.
it is truly an essential part of my show successes.
that is when i have them.

so the fellows and i were on our batphones...
back and forth.
back and forth all over again.
i needed a fresh square gizmo.

they are free if you order one from the company.
my own was used for months on end.
unfortunately, it went missing on me.
and i was gifted by a fellow vendor to her spare reader.
last weekend, while i was set up to do the last of the indoor markets,
my little doohickey, jumped the sharks.
yes indeedy. it flew out of my ipad and onto the floor.
still eternally hopeful that it would work, i put its bent little jack into my ipad
and had absolutely NO reaction at all.
wonder how that could be, as the jack was bent at a right angle.
ratso rizzo.
it is a problem when that happens.
i sent the menly men to stores on the way home and
then took a quick ride to a sweet couple of square gizmo selling outlets.
i did get not only one, but then a second one as well.
everyone should consider back up.
redundancy should be my objective most of the time.
so i had squares.

sunday was the big show.
i was the first inn the small line of vendors to set up right by the perimeter fence.
this is an ok space i think.
it was also the closest booth to the port-o-san.
it did not enjoy this.
someone has to have the space by the toilet.
i just did not like that it was me.
it was also a spot right next to the highway, so it was bloody cold.
there were winds diving and driving around me.
they shook the heck out of my tent and i feared for some lift-off.
luckily, my home constructed concrete weights did the trick.
things remained earthbound.

one of the port o san guests came out and asked if i had any toilet tissue.
i held my tongue.
instead of screaming at her... i shook my head and said no.
really????
i have beads and flowers everywhere that i paid the priviledge of good money
for a parking lot space in which to display them.
next time, i will come much better equipped.
i will charge a lot for a roll.
all i could think of naturally, is an episode from what else?
"seinfeld".
do you have a square? do you have a square to spare? one ply?
yes, i was gifted with a superb spot to sell from.

in spite of this geographical location ....
i had a half decent day.
i may even mean that literally.

a great highlight was some of my friends visiting...
dan and lucy
were the only two to be snapped by my ipad.
when i grow up, i will learn how to use the camera feature to take prettier pics with.
until then,
here they are

dan's wife jamie was getting some food for her family
and their son was doing jumping jacks in his wagon,
off ipad camera .
he was totally adorable and photo worthy,
i am just not up to taking a fast photo.
lucy's hubby, mickey and daughter, izzy
were explorig the market.
or getting food too.
i am blurry on some details...
cause i was in and out of the social stuff.
i was sorta there to do some selling.

anyways... i am pooped and tomorrow is my date to go to brimfield.
it is a date with another seller at these shows,
my friend trish.
in spite of my horrid child and husband gifting me with a cold,
i am going...
in the rain and raw weather.
it just has to happen or i will explode with anticipation,
you know i am not prone to hyperbole.
ha .  ha  . ha.

facebook says that rachel ashwell will be there tomorrow too.
i already warned her i am coming.
she was elegant and polite.
after all these years in america, she ought to know better

night all.

rings on display yesterday.

May Flowers and Turquoise

i love me a lot of color.
right now, it is both pink... and turquoise.
when i used to practice architecture, i rebelled.
i wore pink every day.
most of my coworkers wore black.
they were ninjas in design.
of course folks thought they dressed so snappily,
that it became really hard to separate the nerds from the cool kids.
i wasn't even close enough to being a nerd to be remotely cool.
so i was stuck in the nether regions.

now i am just trying my hardest to follow my own heart.
over the past few years, i have been collecting some pretty turquoise beads.
not that i have a plan for things most of the time,
but i always wanted something truly as grand as a well-crafted native american necklace
or an armful of gorgeous silver and turquoise stone bracelets.

my sweet friend Trish gifted me with some plastic beads she couldn't use.
i took them home and felt that it was a challenge to play with them.
i added and subtracted things until i came up with something that i didn't like,
but
LOVED.
so it is not a hand crafted Navajo Necklace in silver and gorgeous blue stones.
it is however ME.
now i just would love to have all those cute pink dresses i once wore
(and my pre-children body/when i gave a damn body)
as an underpinning for one of my insane necklaces.
i love that i can translate my crazy pearl necklaces into colors.
i am having a fun time...
and i have added both enamel flowers and
a vintage steel cut buckle with an antique tintype photo set into it.

nerd or cool kid...
who cares?

this makes me very happy.
***
also, i am making a necklace for a local school fundraising event.
it is for  the Sophia Academy.
it is a school dedicated to middle school girls in the inner part of Providence city.
they have few advantages available to them in their natural experiences.
they fight uphill battles.
 they are truly amazing kids
and just waiting to become amazing women.

the addition of a little TLC
and some resources,
with a smidgeon of mentoring,
will inform these young women's lives.
i am so honored to be asked to participate,
to help support the school, the children, the mentors in place,
and everything else possible.
my skills are very specific these days,
yet may translate somehow to help generate some tuition
even if it is through creating a necklace or two.

this is one of the ladies under construction
she is going to have some other stuff added to her surface.
it is either this lady ...
or her sister who is shown below her*.
(*photo to follow in the morning light)

one of these two ladies will be selected...
once a bunch of other parts are added to both of the pearly pieces.

 the Sophia Necklace
will enjoy some pretty additives of sparkly rhinestone necklaces and lengths of chain
 and
enamel pins that one of the board members has culled from estate sales.
and
oddments that speak of great wisdom.
oodles of glass based pearls from the sixties.
venerable and pretty.
 ***
finally, for this posting,
a few nice necklaces, rings, and other floral items
MAY FLOWERS!

dutch garden necklaces

pink rings for their fingers

earrings... likely for my ears... i am feeling quite greedy.

other unassigned blooms for bracelets and other necklaces.

time to get back to work...
i mean tending flowers.

xoxo.

the smell of testosterone, ice hockey and hair gel

ok, no debate about my shallowness.
i can't be honest and consider myself a deep thinker under some situations.
sometimes things show up that are very off my usual path
and seem to overwhelm me.

recently, my husband had hernia repair surgery.
it meant i was to do all the lifting for a while.
not a problem.
we also have a smart ass 15 year old daughter.
she is funny and witty and sometimes even so dramatic,
she gets loopy from the highs and lows.

it is also the end of the ice hockey season.
(imagine a ticker tape parade in your mind and you get an inkling of how happy this makes me.)
so hubby dearest assumed that Tess would enjoy going to a P-Bruins game with him.
she likes to say she is the son that my hubby never had.
graham dislikes this regular jibe.
can't say i blame him,
but it IS kind of funny everytime she says it.
unfortunately, tess did not really want to go.
she had experienced a horrific week of teen aged angst plus
the regular day to day high school crap.
her mind was settling in for some netflix reruns of chick tv and
slothful life in sweatpants.

in a split second, my husband saw that his assumption could be altered.
he saw that he had a chance to rope me in too.
would i like to go to the P-Bruins game?

i did not want to go,
but i did feel keeping an eye on him was still warranted.
this is also as close as a date that we can manage these days.
so all three of us put on our big girl panties and left to go to the game.
tess went only because i made her go.
hubby had no idea that we had struck this agreement.
he is a lot better off not knowing too much around here.

we parked across the highway and walked the two blocks to the venue.

"the dunk"
(short for the Dunkin' Donuts Center),
as it is affectionately known, is a wonderful place to view a game.
we have been many times.
it is pretty clean,
has more junk food than one can imagine
and serves
Dunkin' Donuts coffee.
a mere $4.50 for an iced coffee.
i also know two buildings away on the outside is a perfectly good starbucks.

i was determined not to let my resistence show.

we found our seats occupied by some other folks, so we just took the next ones over.
the guys at the end of our row, were in-house vendors.
they sold golf time.
if anyone got upset that their seats were taken, they could make a fuss...
or just go with it.
with the standard music playing, it is a lot like musical chairs anyways.

the game started.
we were sitting at an end ... near to the goalie.
my daughter plays in goal.
my husband coaches.
they had meaningful conversations about all of this.
positively technical.
i endured.

i was in a trance actually.
for no apparent reason, i was high.
it was a contact high, but narcotic nevertheless.
i drew in the smells deeply.
popcorn, check.
hair gel. check.
funky hats and baseball caps? check.
what was that intoxicating smell floating on the air?
not only was i almost able to chew it, but it was intangible.
my husband started to smirk at me.

as any of you readers may know,
my work and world is constructed of wire, beads, vintage metal components,
and many other pieces used to build jewelry.
they are intended to be manipulated, described, and ultimately sold.
my target audience is women.
almost all the day, every day, women.
i adore women.

every now and again,
a departure in the procession of womenly interests, another thing can sneak in.

this night where i attended a hockey game was one of those departures.
it was a place where unbroken young men slid around an oval sheet of ice.
they did so with complete ease and reckless abandon,
for the purpose of moving a small round black disk into a net.
(and perhaps a few well timed creative moments of pugilism too)

 i was overcome.
it took a few minutes to realize what the source was.
it was the exotic combo of
pheromones.
plain and simply manly smells.
good manly smells.
unexpectedly smacking me in the face kind of manly smells.
my husband kept smirking.
he is not in the overwhelmingly female life that i am in.
so he finds it funny that i was unaware of how badly i needed a break from it.
i drew in this aroma as deeply as possible.
it smelled
gooooo-oood
{two syllables worth of good.}

just guys all dressed up with many of their mates and kids too.
all clean and sparkly... in the spirit of a fun night out.
wholesome.
unexpectedly intoxicating.
i know, i know, i should get out more.
i just don't.
this was a super good reminder that it is a good idea.
i may become a little more balanced as a person if i do.
balance is a very good thing.

xoxo.
